VanLife Beacon

The VanLife Beacon world

Two ways in, one hub. Travel the domains — territories sized by how much verified content lives there — or travel the places, from region to country to its rules. Everything you open is a real, sourced page.

Each territory is a domain of the hub. Its size is how much verified content lives there, its shade how mature that content is. Pick one to go inside.

US

United States

Key rules

Scheme
None. No federal or state self-containment certification, sticker or register exists
Toilet requirement

Enforcement
Land-manager conditions of use and pack-it-out rules, not certification. Grey/black water discharge is governed by state and local health codes — verify per state

Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent — each on its own timetable
Registration
Motorhome homologation
CZ

Czechia

Key rules

Scheme
Emission zones targeting heavy goods vehicles
Sticker / access
Vignette for HGV above threshold (varies by city)
Min diesel
Targets HGV > 3.5t/6t; a van under 3.5t is generally unaffected
Where
Prague and other cities (HGV zones); Prague also restricts historic-centre access separately
Registration
No LEZ registration needed for a van under 3.5t
DK

Denmark

Key rules

Scheme
Miljøzone (diesel only)

DPF or Euro 5 (vans ≤3.5t); petrol, hybrid and EV exempt
Where
5 (national rule) — Copenhagen/Frederiksberg, Aarhus, Odense, Aalborg

FR

France

Key rules

Scheme
ZFE / Crit'Air

Not a classic LEZ — emission-differentiated urban toll rings
Sticker / access
AutoPASS toll account, priced by emissions class — no LEZ sticker
Min diesel
No Euro standard (toll, not a zone); zero-emission zones authorised Mar 2025, not yet in force
Where
Oslo (Bomringen), Bergen, Kristiansand; temporary diesel bans in Oslo during pollution peaks
Registration

AU

Australia

Key rules

Scheme
No national standard. The CMCA 'Leave No Trace' scheme is voluntary and self-nominated
Toilet requirement
No legal requirement nationally; individual council sites may require an onboard toilet
Capacity rule
No legal capacity rule. The operating principle is retain all waste onboard and leave no trace
